By creating a theater where many artists have found their home for the whole life, stage director Viktor Panov opened the way to art to the audience who wanted to see not always smooth, but free action. The Youth Theater, organized in 1975, walked a long path from banned performances in its native Arkhangelsk to participating at the Avignon Festival and getting Russia’s main theater prize “Gol-den Mask”. In 1990 Viktor Panov launched the International Festival of Street Theatres, which still gathers companies from all over the world in the city near the White Sea. The festival was included in the UNESCO cultural development program. Each of these steps is an aspiration to rise above reality, to combine fiction and reality, to create the world where everything is art and life is a miracle.

After Siam and Lido, the first two standalone cinemas in Siam Square, disappeared in flames long ago, Scala cinema became the last stand-alone cinema in Bangkok that was still open until defeated by COVID 19 in 2020. Not long after its last film screening, it is announced that Scala will be dismantled. A filmmaker who’s also the daughter of one of its former employees, started to explore the Scala and unexpectedly faced her long lost childhood memories when she met her father’s old friend who arrived for the final job of dismantling their workplace.

The film speaks about his life, work and dreams focusing the viewer’s attention on his unique style – the cinematic language of the Master. And through this language the film strives to reveal the personality of the director. Not in the dry language of cinematography and not through abstract reflections, but by showing very specific techniques – the syllables and letters of the cinematic language that Marlen Khutsiev spoke. And that’s the main point of the film. We will witness how this cinematic language was born, how it burst into the world, how it was invented, how it transformed over the years. The core of the plot is not the biography, but the search for and analysis of the formation of specific cinematic techniques and, as a result, the various ideas that are present in Khutsiev’s work. This is a story about a restless and contradictory personality, who – until his very advanced years – retained a keen interest and his own view of the world around him.

The Altai truly becomes a place of power when one manages to see it through the eyes of those who love and know these lands, who are unique conductors of local culture and traditions. The four female protagonists of the film are amazing women whose fates are inextricably bound with the strongest natural places in Altai.
